Phonics and Early Reading
At Hopton C of E Primary Academy, we use Little Wandle for our phonics and early reading. This is a systematic synthetic phonics scheme. The children in Early Years and Key Stage One receive a daily phonics lesson. The lessons are all mapped out and comprehensive. In addition to this, your child will read a booked matched to the sounds they know in a reading session three times a week. This book then comes home with them for another week. The reason for this is that we want the children to gain fluency and develop their comprehension and research states that reading a book more than once supports this.

Phonics Screening Check
Reading is at the heart of Hopton and we know that reading unlocks learning and opportunities for children so we are dedicated to supporting all children. This means that we start teaching your child to read as soon as they start with us. We continue to give children support even if they leave Year 2 still needing more support.
Children sit a statutory Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year 1. If they do not pass this, then they will be required to re-sit this at the end of Year 2.
Please see the leaflet for more information:
We regularly hold phonics workshops in school and love to share our knowledge which parents and carers. We know this is not the way that many of us learnt to read, so we are more than happy to help and answer any questions you may have.
